Smile Herb Shop is owned by Tom and Linda Wolfe. They have worked side by side throughout the last thirty years. Both are active in the business on a daily basis and manage different aspects of work. In their personal lives, they are parents to two sons, Jason and Brennan. Both are active members of Adelphi Friends Meeting. Tom Wolfe, Co-owner
Outside of Smile herb Shop/Smileherb.com, Tom is one of 127 professional members of the American Herbalists Guild, the primary organization representing clinical herbalism in the USA. Tom was principal investigator for a grant team composed of James A Duke (ethnobotanist), Leonard Wisneski (endocrinologist), Narayan Patel (biochemist), David Hoffmann (Medical herbalist from Wales), and Paul Petit (third generation Medical herbalist from France). This team studied the use of herbal medicine in the treatment of high blood pressure. Tom presented the results of this research to the 27th annual symposium of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in Atlanta in May, 1994 as the paper: “The Use of Allium and Crataegus in the Treatment of Stage One Essential Hypertension” Tom has served as the herbal columnist for Pathways magazine, for the past 23 years. Tom was a founding stockholder in Integrative Medicine Communications, which was responsible for the publication of the Commission E Monographs, the primary textbook for German physicians studying herbal medicine. Tom’s main study currently centers in Ayurveda, the traditional herbalism of the Indian subcontinent. He is particularly interested in parallels of physiology, spirituality and herbal use found to be consistent in the three elements of herbal medicine in Ayurveda (the herbal medicine of India) and the five elements of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine. Tom has been teaching herbal medicine at Georgetown medical school since 2001 Tom also serves as treasurer for the board of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan DC, the boards of the William Penn House, and Washington Quaker Workcamps, as well as being a consultant to the board of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association. Tom chairs the annual fundraising drive and major donor campaign for all four organizations. Linda Wolfe, Co-Owner
After selling her restaurant interests, she began to work at a then very small Smile Herb Shop. At Smile, she worked side by side with Tom in the expansion of Smile’s offerings. A very small store selling only herbs did not provide a large enough customer base to survive so it was imperative to expand Smile’s offerings. Linda developed the natural body care, aromatherapy, books & gifts categories that now contribute to seasonal sales particularly. Currently, she manages all procurement & inventory control, web site development, store display & runs the monthly staff meetings. As the marketplace climate changed, she went actively into learning the world of e-commerce as it works for “bricks & clicks” retailers. She worked over the course of two years to build www.smileherb.com with the help of a web developer. She found her earlier background in fine arts & design served her well in this process. The success of this small, simpler site proved the catalyst for a full- scale foray into a more advanced e-commerce site. For the last year and a half the bulk of her time has been spent in the creation of this a new, much improved smileherb.com. Her personal areas of interest include women’s spirituality, aromatherapy, painting and gardening.
