Eleuthero is recognized as being a gentle alternative to Panax Ginseng. Eleuthero is used during times of stress and is especially notable as an immune tonic in the middle aged and elderly.

Eleuthero was the first herb to be classified as an adaptogen by Russian scientists and was therefore, the model for all future research on this group of herbs. An adaptogen is a substance that helps the body adapt to various types of stress. In order to achieve this status a plant must meet the following criteria:
It must be safe.
It must also have a broad-spectrum, normalizing action that brings an organism back to homeostasis.
It must produce a nonspecific response in the body.

In the late 60's and 70's multiple studies of this herb were conducted in healthy people and Eleuthero was found to increase the ability of subjects to withstand stress (from heat, noise, exercise and increase in workload). Subjects also experienced increases in mental alertness and work output. As a result of this research, Eleuthero was being used by Russian athletes and astronauts to prepare them for their events.

Eleuthero contains a group of constituents known as eleutherosides it also contains triterpenoid sapponins, and glycans, and many others. Modern science has not proven either exactly how eleuthero works or the relevance of each of its various constituents. Most likely it is a combination of many of the constituents, and is therefore best to take the whole herb.

The extract is normally standardized to 0.8% eleutherosides B and E, and is normally taken at doses between 100-200 mg per day.  The standardized extract is a ten-fold concentrate of the whole herb that we sell.  The dose for the organic whole herb is 1000-2000 mg per day (or 1-2 grams).  The German Commission E and the British Herbal Pharmocopeia both recommend 2-3 grams per day for a variety of uses.
