The German Commission E approved saw palmetto berry for urinary support. Research has indicated it is effective in supporting the lower urinary tract. The berries were used as a tonic by Native Americans and later by settlers as subsistence food.
The plant itself looks like a short palm tree, except that instead of growing tall like a tree it tends to spread into a bushy shrub-sized plant. The palm produces white flowers that lead to the formation of reddish-black berries.
